FBK Sensors & Devices and Xlam Dolomiti: Supertimber Emerges at the Intersection of Research and Industry

08 September 2026

Supertimber represents an optimal convergence of the scientific expertise of FBK’s Sensors & Devices (SD) Center and the industrial vision of  Xlam Dolomiti. Leveraging the advanced materials science domain knowledge of the SPIN Research Unit, SD researchers redesigned and densified the cellular structure of Paulownia wood, converting it into a high-performance biocomposite competitive with steel and carbon fiber.

This accomplishment is the outcome of a four-year collaborative co-design initiative that successfully scaled the technology from laboratory-scale specimens to an industrial pilot plant. Supported by the Autonomous Province of Trento, this project serves as an exemplary model of technology transfer—translating frontier research into patented intellectual property and regional economic value, while opening new avenues for applications in architecture, sports equipment, and the aerospace sector.
