Light at the Nanoscale: The Centre for Sensors and Devices Advances Single-Photon Technologies at SPW 2026

At the international Single Photon Workshop (SPW 2026), three researchers from the Centre for Sensors&Devices presented original work on single-photon technologies: a microchip generating truly random numbers for unbreakable quantum security, a smart photon-counting camera for faster medical diagnostics and autonomous driving sensors (LiDAR), and an efficient single-photon source for the quantum communication networks of the future.
“FBK is a leader in single-photon detection,” said Richard Hall-Wilton, Director of the Centre for Sensors&Devices, underscoring the importance of this international event for sharing the Centre’s research results and staying up to date with scientific advances in the field.
The event offered the researchers direct exposure to the international single-photon research community, reflecting the Centre’s ongoing commitment to advancing quantum technologies from fundamental physics to chip-level engineering.
