Inside FBK's Clean Rooms: National TV Spotlights Advanced Sensor Fabrication

07 October 2026

RaiNews24, Italy’s national news channel, recently featured the clean rooms of FBK’s Sensors and Devices Centre, showcasing the microfabrication and nanofabrication processes behind some of today’s most advanced sensor technologies. The tour was led by Alessandro Cian, a researcher at the Centre and one of FBK’s Science Ambassadors, who guided viewers through the facility.

The segment highlighted applications ranging from healthcare diagnostics and environmental monitoring to space missions and particle physics experiments at CERN in Geneva. Among the technologies featured were diamond-based sensors: by using techniques that allow a small number of atoms to be introduced into the material, researchers can create devices with extreme sensitivity to changes in their surroundings and also with potential applications spanning quantum technologies such as qubits and biomedicine.

The feature offers a rare look into the fabrication processes that turn fundamental research into working devices, underscoring the Centre’s role in advancing sensor technology from concept to application.
