Gas Sensors Team | MTSD

The “Gas Sensor Team” (GST) conducts a broad range of research and development activities focused on monitoring gaseous parameters, including both quantitative and qualitative analysis of gas concentrations and gas flow.

GST expertise spans the full innovation pipeline, bridging fundamental research (TRL 1–3) and applied technological development (TRL 4–6). The team has extensive experience in designing, simulating, developing, and testing gas sensor platforms tailored for specific applications across both research and industrial settings. A key strength of the team lies in its deep understanding of device operating principles, supported by advanced characterization techniques such as confocal Raman operando spectroscopy. This fundamental insight drives the technological advancement of sensor systems. Sensor fabrication is carried out using microfabrication processes on 6-inch silicon wafers, within ISO5 and ISO6 certified cleanrooms at FBK. Functional testing is performed using gas test benches developed in-house over the past decade, enabling the evaluation of both in-house fabricated sensors and commercial off-the-shelf devices. The collaboration with the integration and packaging group of the MNF unit of FBK allows for the development of ready-to-use prototypes for different applications, including air quality monitoring, precision farming, health applications and explosive gas detection. The GST is currently involved in private and public funded projects, in collaboration with Universities, RTO and industrial partners.
