Biography

Alessandro Cian is a researcher at Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK), working at the Micro Nano Facility (MNF) within the Sensors and Devices Center in Trento, Italy. Since joining FBK in 2019, he has been involved in the coordination of cleanroom activities and in the development and fabrication of micro- and nanostructured devices. His background in condensed matter physics and experience in micro- and nanofabrication support research and technological development across several fields, including biomedical applications and anti-counterfeiting. His activities span sensor technologies for space applications, devices for high-energy physics, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), and emerging technologies for diamond-based quantum research. Alongside his research activities, he contributes to science communication and outreach as a Science Ambassador for the Sensors and Devices Center.

Expertise

  • Lithographic processes across multiple platforms, including stepper, mask aligner, laser, laser interference, electron-beam (EBL), focused ion beam (FIB) and nanoimprint lithography
  • Development and fabrication of micro- and nanostructured devices
  • Microfabrication technologies for sensing, biomedical, and anti-counterfeiting applications
  • Micro- and nanoscale characterization using focused ion beam–scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM)
  • Development of diamond-based quantum technologies, focusing on the fabrication and engineering of color centers through ion implantation for quantum sensing and other quantum applications.
  • Quality management in semiconductor manufacturing, including Statistical Process Control (SPC), process monitoring, and the development and maintenance of Work Instructions (WIs)
