The SD Center's new roadmap for the future

The SD center, with 35 years of experience in the manufacture of silicon sensors, has been awarded a grant of over 50 million euros as part of the European IPCEI ME/CT project to develop a new generation of microelectromechanical sensors and systems. The Foundation’s total investment will be EUR 82 million over the next three years, largely earmarked for the expansion of the Clean Rooms, the technological heart of the facility.
The initiative follows the success of the first IPCEI ME project, concluded after five years and 14 million investment, which enabled major advances in 3D sensor integration technology and new industrial collaborations. FBK sensors are now being used in advanced sectors: from CERN to autonomous driving, from medical diagnostics to the International Space Station.
The new project will further strengthen FBK’s strategic position in Europe, with new hires, research into innovative materials (silicon carbide, germanium) and the development of components for 5G/6G communications, artificial intelligence, quantum and energy transition. All in line with the European Chips Act for EU technology autonomy.
